INSURANCE FAQ
Who needs a life insurance policy?
Anyone can benefit from a solid life insurance policy. It is
especially important for parents of young children to have a life
insurance policy that will prevent the family from suffering a
financial loss in the event of one parent's untimely death.
However, older people often look to life insurance as a means of
paying for funeral and other expenses that arrise at the end of one's
life. Still others purchase a life insurance policy in order to
leave behind an inheritance for their loved ones.
How much life insurance do I need to carry?
You should carry enough life insurance to guarantee that your spouse
and children will be able to maintain their current lifestyle, in
addition to paying for funeral expenses. Your broker will be able
to help you determine exactly how much insurance this is by taking into
account your current salary and your family's yearly expenses.
What is whole life insurance?
Whole life insurance combines an insurance policy with an investment in
your own future. When you purchase whole life coverage, a
portion of your money will be invested in stocks, bonds, and money
market accounts. You will be able to take out the invested money
in the future, if ever you should need it, without compromising your
benefits.
What is term life insurance?
Term
life insurance is coverage that lasts for a period of one to thirty
years. Unlike a whole life policy, term insurance will expire.
You cannot "cash out" a term policy; only your beneficiaries will
be paid upon your death. Term is the most affordable life
insurance option, and the one suited to most individuals.
I only have a learner's permit. Do I need auto insurance?
Not yet. You may only drive with another licensed driver in the
car, and he or she must carry auto insurance. Once you have your
own license and vehicle, you will have to purchase auto insurance.
Should I add my child to my own auto insurance policy?
When should I carry more than general liability auto insurance?
If you are driving a newer vehicle, it is a good idea to make sure that
your auto insurance will cover the cost of replacing your car in the
event that it is totaled in an accident. Certain people may also
benefit from having add-ons like roadside assistance and towing
services. Your insurance agent will be able to help you find a
policy that will meet your needs.
Does my auto insurance cover me when I am driving someone else's vehicle?
Generally, the insurance stays with the vehicle. This means that
as long as you are driving an insured car with the permision of the
car's owner, you will be covered by the vehicle owner's insurance.
However, you should verify this information with the insurance
company and car owner before operating someone else's vehicle.
Do I really need homeowner's insurance?
Anyone with a mortgage on their home will be required to carry a
homeowner's insurance policy, but you should have insurance even if you
own your home outright. Your home is likely your most expensive
possession, and without insurance you are at risk of losing not only
your home but all its contents and equity as well. No one can
afford to be without homeowner's insurance.
What does renter's insurance cover?
Renter's insurance covers your personal property while it is stored
within your rental home. It also protects you fron liability
should someone become injured inside your home. Your landlord's
insurance policy will cover the building itself and the surrounding
property, but renter's insurance will protect you and your belongings.
Is flood insurance necessary?
Flood insurance is only necessary if you live in an area prone to
flooding. Homeowners living in a flood plain will be required to
show proof of flood insurance in order to be approved for a mortgage.
Others may choose to carry flood insurance if they have a
finished basement or store expensive items on the bottom level of their
homes.
